For readers who enjoy historical fiction with a strong sense of place, and anyone curious about Scottish history, clan life and the wars of the 1640s. Friendship, divided loyalties and love across Highland and Lowland worlds bring the history to life.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
John Splendid is a historical novel by Neil Munro, a Highland writer born in Inveraray, the little town on Loch Fyne that serves as the heart of the Campbell country. It appeared in 1898 and carries the longer title The Tale of a Poor Gentleman and the Little Wars of Lorn. Munro wrote it to give the Gaelic Highlands a voice that was neither sentimental nor mocking, and to bring a hard season of clan history to life through people you can like.
It is told by a Highland gentleman looking back on those years, and it follows his friendship with a boastful, brave and generous soldier of fortune, the John Splendid of the title. You get a war seen from the ground, with its marches, quarrels, jokes and divided loyalties. You also get a love story between old school friends, complicated by shyness and misunderstanding.

Lorn and Inveraray on the edge of war
Munro knew this country from childhood, and he writes about its lochs, hills, weather and small towns as if each were a character. The time is the 1640s, when Scotland is torn by the quarrel between the King and his opponents.
In the Highlands that national quarrel is tangled up with older clan feuds. Another man might stand with Argyll because his people have always done so. The title speaks of the little wars of Lorn, and that phrase shows Munro's aim. He is less interested in grand strategy than in how a great conflict looks to people whose lives are tied to a few glens.
The narrator is a gentleman of modest means, a laird of a small estate, who is drawn into events as they gather speed. Through his eyes we meet the neighbors, kinsmen and servants who make up a clan community. They tease one another, repeat old stories and watch the roads for news.
The opening chapters, then, are about waiting. Rumors travel faster than riders, and people prepare for the threat of an invasion. Munro lets you feel a community that senses trouble coming but cannot say where it will strike first. Into this uneasy world walks the man who gives the book its name.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
