What happens
- The Templar reads a challenge demanding the release of the captives and their property within an hour.
- Front-de-Bœuf warns that the English archers are dangerous and that most of the knights’ soldiers are in York.
- The Templar writes a reply rejecting the challenge and requesting a priest before the prisoners’ threatened execution.
- The Black Knight explains the French reply to the gathered rescuers, and Locksley calls the threat a delaying trick.
- The hermit refuses to act as confessor, but Wamba offers to use his own early religious training.
- Wamba puts on the hermit’s robe and departs, while Locksley prepares to prevent messages from leaving the castle.
