De quoi parle ce livre ?

What does it cost a careful man to share a road with the wrong companion? Bill Hardwick of Tumut is sober, strong and the fastest shearer in his district. He owns a selection and has a capable wife and two small children. Then Janus Stoate turns up at his gate on the last evening before shearing, and Bill invites him to ride along.

This is In Bad Company and Other Stories by Rolf Boldrewood, published in 1901. The author was a squatter, then a police magistrate. The title tale is a short novel of the shearers' strikes of the early 1890s, followed by about forty shorter pieces of bushrangers, droving, horses and old Sydney.

Point clé 1 sur 10

A careful selector builds his name by labour

Bill Hardwick, born at Tumut, is the author's fine example of an Australian.

Bill drinks moderately, avoids wasting his earnings at the public house, and saves. With two hundred pounds he takes up a selection of three hundred and twenty acres and builds a four-room slab cottage with his own hands. Then he marries Jenny Dawson, whom he has known since he first cracked a stockwhip.

Jenny is his match. She makes good butter, saddles her own horse and reads the newspapers while Bill is away shearing. Next door, Dick Donahue spends his days at race meetings and the public house, and his farm is mortgaged to the hilt. The banker, Mr. Calthorpe, has told Bill that a sober man has a good name to trade on. Bill has everything to lose. A good name takes years to build and one season to shake.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Dans la mauvaise compagnie et autres nouvelles

What is In Bad Company and Other Stories about?

It joins a short novel about a farmer-shearer caught up in the 1890s shearers' strikes with about forty shorter pieces. These cover bushrangers, droving, shearing sheds, horses, dogs, school days and memories of old Sydney and Port Fairy.

Who is Janus Stoate in In Bad Company?

Stoate is a Londoner and union delegate who talks of rights while begging rations from the squatters he criticises. He travels with Bill Hardwick, loses his friendship, and sets out to get even with him.

What does taking up a selection mean in the story?

A selection is a block of Crown land bought on easy terms under New South Wales law. Bill pays two shillings an acre at first and owes the rest later, then builds a home and works the land.

Is In Bad Company a true story and when was it written?

The characters are invented, but the setting is real. The tale draws on the shearers' strikes of the early 1890s, including woolshed fires and the seizing of the steamer Dundonald. The collection was first published in 1901.

Is In Bad Company easy to follow?

Yes, the title tale moves along with short scenes, plain speech and clear heroes and villains. The shorter pieces are separate, so you can listen to them one at a time and enjoy each on its own.
