Hyperion — Part 4, Chapter 4 : résumé

Ce qui se passe

1. Alone with wine and fresh candles, Kreisler writes an account of the evening on blank paper in his Bach score.
2. At the Rödelein tea party, he accompanies the daughters through their familiar songs and mocks the praise they receive.
3. Finanzräthin Eberstein chooses a demanding aria, and other guests join in badly coordinated ensemble singing.
4. Pressed to play Bach’s variations, Kreisler watches the audience depart and becomes absorbed in an extraordinary musical vision.
5. He condemns casual performers who torment musicians and treats serious musical study as a duty requiring complete dedication.
6. Imagining the noise around his attic, he stays where he is and argues that composers need protection from intrusive sounds.

Les points à remarquer

The question states his central grievance: the art he loves becomes a source of suffering when others perform without sensitivity.
