A threat overheard by the study door

Helen Vardon lives a calm life with her father, a solicitor who loves to work with his hands. One afternoon she creeps downstairs for a volume of The Spectator and hears Mr. Otway, a man she knows only slightly, tell her father that he faces seven years of penal servitude.

The money in question is five thousand pounds of trust funds, which her father lent to a friend instead of investing. Otway offers a way out. He will cover the debt if he may marry Helen. Her father refuses with fury and calls him a blackmailer.

Helen keeps quiet, but she remembers a hint her father let slip about other alternatives. She fears he may take his own life, and that fear drives everything that follows.

Questions about La Confession d’Helen Vardon

What is Helen Vardon's Confession about?

It tells how Helen Vardon marries a man she loathes to save her father, then faces grief, love, and a coroner's inquest. Dr. Thorndyke appears as the investigator whose reading of the evidence decides her fate.

Who is Dr. Thorndyke?

He is a barrister and medical expert who insists on examining facts rather than relying on appearances. Here he advises Helen and investigates the deaths in the story.

Is Helen Vardon's Confession a true story?

No, it is a work of fiction by R. Austin Freeman, set in 1908. It is written as Helen's own memoir.

Why is the book called a confession?

Helen writes her history years later and admits her mistakes, including a secret she kept at an inquest. The title also points to the guilt she feels as the story unfolds.

Is it easy to follow for new readers of Freeman?

Yes. The story moves in clear stages, with a lively narrator, short scenes, and humour among the craftswomen. You can enjoy it without knowing any other Thorndyke book.
