De quoi parle ce livre ?
What happens when a bedtime story is so frightening that a small girl runs through a dark house, falls down the stairs, and lands in her family's sitting room in a yellow flannel nightdress? Helen has listened night after night to ghost tales from Miss Thusa, a tall, gray spinner who travels from house to house with her wheel.
Caroline Lee Hentz, an American novelist, wrote this tale of New England family life to show how early fears shape a person. It follows Helen to young womanhood, alongside her fierce sister Mittie and the young doctor Arthur Hazleton.

A frightening story sends Helen tumbling downstairs
The book opens on a stormy night in the Gleason house. Little Helen sits in a yellow flannel nightdress beside Miss Thusa, who spins flax into thread and tells stories.
That night she acts out the worm-eaten traveler, a tale of a lonely woman at her wheel who wishes for company. Skeleton feet, then rotting ankles, then a bloated body come down the chimney, and the stranger leads her to an open grave.
Alone in bed, Helen cannot sleep. She runs for her mother, trips on her long nightdress, and rolls down the stairs into the lit sitting room. Her mother says she has been sleepwalking. A fever follows, and a young doctor named Arthur Hazleton comes. He tells her she will take her bitter medicine, and she does. Her mother asks Miss Thusa never again to give Helen thoughts of death. One frightening tale can leave a mark that grows with the child.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
