Résumé de Philosophie de l'esprit de Hegel
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers of philosophy who want Hegel's mature system in a short form, and students of psychology, politics or religion who enjoy exploring the roots of later debates.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
What if you are free only because other people have made you so? Hegel's Philosophy of Mind, the last part of his Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences, first published in 1817, sets out to answer this. It follows what he calls Geist, a German word for both mind and spirit. The path runs from the stirrings of the soul in the body, through consciousness, memory and will, to law, family, state, art, religion and philosophy. At every step a contradiction appears, and the next stage resolves it.

Mind is freedom and self-knowledge
Hegel opens with the old Greek command to know yourself. He says it is not about private quirks. It asks the mind to know its true nature, and that nature is freedom. Freedom is the substance of mind.
Mind is not given to itself ready made. It goes out into the world, meets resistance, and returns to itself enriched. In nature reason lies scattered outside itself. In mind it comes back to itself.
Hegel divides the book into three stages. Subjective spirit is the individual mind. Objective spirit is the shared world of rights, family and state. Absolute spirit is art, religion and philosophy. Freedom, for him, is not the lack of limits. It is being at home in what you do and know.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about Philosophie de l'esprit de Hegel
What is Hegel's Philosophy of Mind about?
It follows the development of mind or spirit from the bodily soul through consciousness, thought and will, then through law, family and state, and finally to art, religion and philosophy, where mind knows itself.
What does Geist mean in Hegel?
Geist is a German word that means both mind and spirit. Hegel uses it for the thinking, free, self-aware side of human life, in single persons and in shared culture and history.
Where does Philosophy of Mind fit in the Encyclopaedia?
It is the third part of the Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences, after the Logic and the Philosophy of Nature. The final edition appeared in 1830.
Is Hegel's Philosophy of Mind hard to read?
No. The book has a clear plan that moves step by step from the soul to consciousness, will, the state, art, religion and philosophy. Each short numbered paragraph builds on the one before it, so you always know where you are going.
What is the master and slave idea in Hegel?
It is a scene of two selves who each seek recognition. One yields and serves, the other rules. Hegel uses it to show that self-consciousness depends on being acknowledged by another free self.
