In Chapter 2, James Harthouse arrives in Coketown as a political recruit and gains Josiah Bounderby’s welcome while taking a special interest in Louisa Bounderby. Her warmth toward her brother Tom breaks her usual reserve, and Harthouse cultivates the young man’s friendship as he studies her attachment.

What happens

  1. Bored with travel and other pursuits, James Harthouse accepts his brother’s suggestion to join the political supporters of facts.
  2. Thomas Gradgrind sends Harthouse to Coketown, where Bounderby welcomes him and defends the smoke, mills, and treatment of workers.
  3. Bounderby introduces Harthouse to Louisa, whose guarded manner and discomfort with her husband attract the visitor’s attention.
  4. Harthouse admits that he supports Gradgrind’s views without believing in them, and Louisa appears somewhat favorably impressed.
  5. At dinner, Tom’s arrival draws a warm smile from Louisa, revealing an affection Harthouse closely observes.
  6. Harthouse encourages Tom despite his concealed mockery of Bounderby, and Tom offers to guide him back to the hotel.
