Chapter 53 of 59 · 21 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 53, Handel walks into Orlick’s trap, hears him confess to attacking his sister, and escapes death when Herbert and his companions arrive. Back in London, Handel endures pain and fears that Provis is discovered, but Wednesday dawns with his strength restored and the escape preparations still in place.

What happens

  1. Handel reaches an isolated sluice house, where Orlick catches him in a noose and binds him to a ladder.
  2. Orlick threatens to kill Handel and destroy his body in the kiln, blaming him for lost work and romantic rejection.
  3. Orlick admits attacking Handel’s sister and reveals knowledge of Provis, his escape plans, and Compeyson’s hostility.
  4. As Orlick raises a hammer, Handel shouts; Herbert, Startop, and Trabb’s boy enter, and Orlick escapes.
  5. Herbert explains how the abandoned letter prompts the rescue, and the friends postpone pursuing Orlick to avoid endangering Provis.
  6. They return to London, where Handel rests through Tuesday and regains confidence as Wednesday morning arrives.
