In Chapter 2, Catherine collapses in the hot, badly ventilated workings at Jean-Bart, and Chaval carries her to fresh air, briefly showing tenderness. Reports that the Montsou men are cutting cables then trigger an escape up the ladders, where she collapses again and reaches daylight on others’ shoulders.

What happens

  1. Extreme heat and foul air overwhelm Catherine as she pushes coal trams, while Chaval and his fellow miners mock her.
  2. Catherine removes her remaining clothing for relief, but her lamp dies and she collapses in suffocating air.
  3. Chaval carries her to a cool gallery, revives her with water, and promises kindness when she asks for affection.
  4. Captains report that the Montsou men are cutting cables, and the workers rush toward the emergency ladders.
  5. Chaval resumes bullying Catherine, who struggles upward through exhaustion, crowding, repeated halts, and rumors of broken ladders.
  6. Catherine falls unconscious near the top and reaches sunlight carried by others, surrounded by a jeering crowd.
