From the Earth to the Moon, Chapter 23 summary

Chapter 23 of 51 · Part 1 · 4 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 23, the projectile arrives at Stones Hill, and its shock absorbers, windows, supplies, and air renewal system are described as preparations for the three travelers take shape. J. T. Maston tests the sealed vehicle by remaining inside from November 12 to November 20, emerging cheerful and visibly heavier.

What happens

  1. Breadwill and Co. casts the projectile on November 2 and sends it to Stones Hill, where it arrives on November 10.
  2. Water, a movable wooden disc, partitions, padding, and springs are designed to soften the shock of departure.
  3. An airtight entrance, protected windows, provisions, and compressed gas equip the vehicle for its passengers.
  4. Potassium chlorate supplies oxygen, while caustic potash removes carbonic acid from the enclosed air.
  5. J. T. Maston volunteers for a human trial, enters on November 12, and emerges cheerful and heavier on November 20.
