Chapter 16 of 51 · Part 1 · 5 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 16, Barbicane and his colleagues wait for the casting to cool, then complete the Columbiad by September 22, proving that the enormous cannon can be built. Its completion costs Captain Nicholl a bet, opens the site to paying visitors, and prompts a banquet deep inside the gun.
What happens
- Extreme heat prevents access to the casting until August 22, while J. T. Maston worries about the December 1 deadline.
- Workers remove the inner mold by September 3, then machine and polish the bore, completing the cannon on September 22.
- Colonel Blomsberry saves Maston from falling into the tube, and Nicholl records a two-thousand-dollar debt to Barbicane on October 6.
- Barbicane opens Stones Hill to visitors, charging five dollars for descents and earning the Gun Club nearly five hundred thousand dollars.
- On September 25, ten Gun Club members descend for a banquet at the bottom of the cannon.
- Their toasts boom through the tube, the crowd joins their cheers, and Maston declares his overwhelming delight.
