De quoi parle ce livre ?
Two boys in running clothes jog down a dusty country road, joking about a sore toe. Within minutes they stop a runaway horse, hear a groan from an old well, and haul a frightened girl out of the dark. Is this a sports story or a mystery? In Fred Fenton on the Track, it is both.
Allen Chapman wrote this fourth book about Fred Fenton for young readers. The school towns of Riverport, Mechanicsburg and Paulding meet in a great athletic meet that ends with a five-mile road race. Fred also carries a private worry about his family's mine claim in Alaska.

A cross-country run meets a runaway horse
The book opens on an early fall day. Fred Fenton and his friend Andy Carpenter, called Bristles because of his upright hair, are in a cross-country run. Fred has stubbed his toe, so the two jog easily and talk. The long-legged sprinter Colon is far ahead.
Fred came to Riverport a year earlier. He is modest, cheerful and always ready to help a friend. Behind his smile is a worry he shares with almost no one. His father inherited a valuable mine in Alaska, rich investors want it, and the one witness who could settle the matter, Hiram Masterson, has been missing for months.
Then they hear shouting. A horse has bolted with a butcher's cart, and the boy chasing it is Gabe Larkins, who once stole opals and is trying to mend his ways. Fred plans the stop calmly. He and Bristles stand on each side of the road, wave their arms and shout. The horse slows and backs against a fence, and Gabe grabs the reins.
He is also kind to Gabe, who wistfully says he once liked running and never gets the time.
Calm planning and small kindnesses are how this hero meets every problem.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Fred Fenton sur la piste
What is Fred Fenton on the Track about?
It follows Riverport schoolboy Fred Fenton before and during a three-school athletic meet. A rescue at a well, a kidnapped sprinter, a haunted mill and a secret practice run lead up to the five-mile road race.
Do I need to read the earlier Fred Fenton books first?
No. This is the fourth book in the series, but the opening chapter summarizes the earlier stories, so the plot, the Alaska mine claim and the main characters are easy to follow on their own.
Who is Bristles in Fred Fenton on the Track?
Bristles is the nickname of Andy Carpenter, Fred's close friend. His hair sticks up, and he is cheerful, talkative and bold, always ready to charge in with a club while Fred plans.
Why is Colon's disappearance so important?
Colon is Riverport's fastest sprinter and the school's best hope in the short races. Whoever took him wants to weaken Riverport before the meet, so the boys must find him in time.
What is the main message of the book?
The book stresses fair play, kindness and teamwork. Fred wins respect by helping others, treating rivals with honor and thinking carefully, and the story shows that good deeds and sportsmanship matter more than any prize.
