A Maine girl takes Broadway by storm

Clancy Deane rides up Fifth Avenue and decides that clothes are all she lacks. Two days ago she was typing in Zenith, Maine. Now she carries her inheritance and a card from a singer she once nursed, introducing a friend called Florine Ladue to a theatrical agent. Clancy chooses that name to make famous.

She takes a room at the Napoli, a hotel near Times Square run by a cheerful landlady. Before she unpacks, a loud blonde named Fay Marston invites her to a cabaret dinner dance. Clancy enjoys turtle soup and is called Florine by everyone.

When dinner ends, five men whisper about a private game. Fay asks whether Clancy wants to come along.
