In Chapter 8, Gabriel Oak joins the malthouse gathering, hears stories about Bathsheba’s family, and wins a friendly welcome through conversation and music. News of Bailiff Pennyways’s theft and Fanny Robin’s disappearance interrupts the gathering, and Bathsheba directs inquiries while Oak spends a restless night thinking of her.

What happens

  1. The maltster recognizes Gabriel Oak’s family, and the company welcomes the new shepherd with cider and food.
  2. The men tell stories about Joseph Poorgrass, Bathsheba’s parents, and the maltster’s uncertain age.
  3. Gabriel plays his flute, receives praise, and leaves with Jan Coggan, who offers him lodging.
  4. Henery Fray reports that Bathsheba catches Bailiff Pennyways stealing barley and dismisses him after his confession.
  5. Laban Tall announces Fanny Robin’s disappearance, and Bathsheba asks the men to investigate nearby villages and possibly Casterbridge.
  6. At Coggan’s, Gabriel lies awake imagining Bathsheba and plans to retrieve his tools and books from Norcombe.
