À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers who love love poetry, classical forms, and Rome as a place of mind and body, where ancient art meets frank sensuality.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
Erotica Romana is a cycle of love poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It grew out of his stay in Rome in the late 1780s, when he left the German court of Weimar to see Italy and its ancient ruins. The poems were later gathered under the title Roman Elegies. They are written in elegiac couplets, a form the Roman poets Propertius, Tibullus and Ovid used for love poetry.
In these poems the poet walks among the ruins and statues of Rome and also lies in the arms of a lover. Antiquity and desire meet in them. You get a poet who studies the old marble and feels his own body warm to life. This summary walks you through the cycle, its setting, its forms and its main themes, beginning with the poet and the city.

A German poet finds freedom in Rome
Goethe arrived in Rome in 1786 after leaving Weimar in near secrecy. He had been a famous author and a busy official at the court of Duke Karl August. Italy offered him a break from duty and from the cold northern air.
The elegies grow from that release. The poet greets Rome as a place where he feels newly alive. He speaks of streets, palaces, churches and ruins as if each stone had a voice.
The cycle was not printed at once. It appeared in the 1790s, after Goethe had returned to Germany. Some readers then found its frankness a shock, and that debate has followed it since.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Élégies romaines
What is Erotica Romana about?
It is a cycle of love poems by Goethe set in Rome. The poet joins his study of ancient art and ruins with a love affair, and sees both as ways of feeling more alive.
Is Erotica Romana the same as the Roman Elegies?
Yes, it is the same cycle of poems. It is better known today as the Roman Elegies, a name that points to its form, the elegiac couplet of Roman poetry.
When did Goethe write the Roman Elegies?
They come from the years after his first Italian stay, which began in 1786. They were written around the time he returned to Weimar and were published in the 1790s.
What is an elegiac couplet?
It is a pair of lines, a longer one followed by a shorter one. Roman poets such as Ovid and Propertius used it for love poems, and Goethe borrowed it for German verse.
Are the poems hard to read?
Not usually. Each elegy is short and works as a small scene, and the feelings of love, joy and wonder are easy to follow. Reading a few poems aloud lets the rise and fall of each couplet carry you.
