In Chapter 5, Mr. Knightley suspects a private attachment between Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax after an awkward conversation and a troubling game with alphabet letters at Hartfield. He questions Emma in hopes of protecting her, but she dismisses his suspicions and refuses to explain the joke that upsets Jane.

What happens

  1. June begins, and Mr. Knightley increasingly suspects that Frank Churchill conceals an interest in Jane Fairfax while appearing to court Emma.
  2. Emma invites a walking party to Hartfield, where Frank attributes his knowledge of Mr. Perry’s carriage plans to a dream.
  3. Miss Bates confirms the private carriage discussion, and Mr. Knightley watches Frank and Jane for signs of understanding.
  4. During an alphabet game, Jane blushes at blunder and becomes angry when Frank presents Dixon despite Emma’s objections.
  5. After the guests leave, Mr. Knightley questions Emma about the joke and suggests that Frank and Jane admire each other.
  6. Emma confidently denies any attachment, and Mr. Knightley leaves for Donwell Abbey, irritated and unable to help.
