You will love this book if you enjoy folk tales told with a smile, wonder how customs and cities got their names, or want gentle stories to share aloud with children.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
Would you follow a pale light into a pine wood at midnight because it whispers that there is plenty of cheese? A Dutch farm boy named Klaas does exactly that, and his night is one of twenty-one short tales in this book. Each tale answers a small question about the Low Countries.
William Elliot Griffis, an American writer who knew Dutch history well, retold these stories for young readers. He speaks as a friendly storyteller who jokes and winks. Again and again he links a custom, a food, or a city name to a fairy, a giant, or a talking tree.

Point clé 1 sur 10
A vain mermaid and a hungry boy
The first tale, The Entangled Mermaid, sets the mood for the book. A young mermaid is queen of a picnic in a pool near a river mouth. Her friends chatter about hairpins, gloves, and wooden shoes, and they laugh at the idea of petticoats.
Then a worried merman splashes in, gasping. He warns that men with spades and pumps are coming to drain the pool and build a dyke. The queen decides he only wants to run off with the pretty Silver Scales, so she sends him away and goes to her cave for a nap.
She sleeps almost a whole day. When she wakes, a dam stands where the pool used to be, and her long hair tangles in the fence. Four men rush toward her. The second tale, The Boy Who Wanted More Cheese, is warmer and funnier, for a cold light calls Klaas to the fairy ring.
Heed a warning before sulking over who delivers it.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

What is Dutch Fairy Tales for Young Folks about?
It is a collection of twenty-one short tales that explain Dutch customs, foods, tools, and place names through fairies, giants, mermaids, kabouters, and talking trees. Each story links a small piece of Holland to a magical beginning.
What is a kabouter?
A kabouter is a small dark elf who lives underground in mines and forests, digging metals and gems. In these tales kabouters help kind people, tease the foolish, and cast the first carillon of church bells.
Are these tales true or old legends?
They are folk and fairy tales retold by Griffis, who adds jokes and Dutch details of his own. They are not history, but they use real places like Antwerp, Stavoren, and The Hague, along with saints and kings.
Is Dutch Fairy Tales for Young Folks suitable for children?
Yes, it was written for young readers. The tales are short, funny, and full of animals and magic, and Griffis speaks like a friendly storyteller, translating Dutch words as he goes so children can follow easily.
What are klomps and why do the tales mention them?
Klomps, or klompen, are Dutch wooden shoes. They appear in many tales as everyday gear, and The Legend of the Wooden Shoe gives them a fairy origin, with an oak, a kabouter, and an elf.
