A Rider Crosses the Burning Desert

A rider and a black horse named Purgatory cross the desert toward the Kelso water hole. The rider is Drag Harlan, and he hears shooting far ahead.

He creeps up on a granite rock where two men are firing at a target he cannot see. They are Dolver and Laskar, and they are shooting at a wounded man hidden behind the stone. Harlan calls out, and Dolver knows him at once. Harlan says Dolver killed his partner Davey Langan by shooting him in the back, and now Dolver pays for it. Laskar is disarmed and sent away with a warning after the black horse kicks him when he reaches for the guns.

The wounded man behind the rock is Lane Morgan, owner of the Rancho Seco. He expects to be finished off, since he has heard Harlan's name. The story starts with a plain idea: a name and the man who carries it can be very different things.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
