À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

Readers who love swordplay, Highland scenery and old Jacobite loyalties will enjoy it, as will anyone who likes a mystery with a warm heart, a witty hero and a tower full of secrets.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

Doom Castle is a Scottish adventure of revenge, secrets and love, written by Neil Munro and set in the Argyll Highlands in the years after the Jacobite rising of 1745. A French nobleman, Count Victor de Montaiglon, rides into a country he does not know, hunting a spy who betrayed a woman he once knew. It gives you chases, duels, a haunted tower and a love story, all against the sea and hills of the west coast.

Victor arrives with one friendly name in his pocket, that of a poor Highland baron who lives in a bare castle on a rock. He soon finds that the castle holds more riddles than the man he is hunting. Who plays the flageolet at midnight? Who signals from a window? Why does a servant lock him in a room? Munro builds these puzzles with humor, and with a deep feeling for the land and its lost customs.

You will meet a dashing and witty swordsman, a sad and proud laird, a small servant who dreams of war, and a Duke who rules the district. Let us begin with the storm-lashed shore where Victor first meets danger.

A Frenchman Meets the Silent Highlands

The story opens on an autumn afternoon beside a Highland sea loch. Count Victor Jean de Montaiglon has come from Paris, and the silence of the valleys weighs on him after the noise of the French capital. He thinks of Argyll as a dull and law-abiding place.

He is wrong. Ten ragged men from the woods, broken clansmen with a taste for fine horses and silver lace, decide that this lone gentleman has been sent to them by Providence. A shot kills his horse. Victor, who has fought at Dettingen and in ten duels, stands with pistols in hand and finds that the enemy will not show themselves.

He is tender with animals, and it costs him much to end the suffering of his horse. Then he picks up his bag and walks on toward a castle named in a letter from a friend, Hugh Bethune, a secretary of the exiled Lord Marischal. His fear is mixed with humor, for he cannot help picturing his stiff aunt watching him run with his own luggage on his back.

This opening sets the tone of the whole book. A man of wit and courage meets a land of mist, menace and sudden beauty, and he does not yet understand either.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
