Death in Venice, Part V summary

Part V of 6 · 36 min to read the part

In V, Gustav von Aschenbach discovers that Venice hides a cholera outbreak, but chooses silence and stays near Tadzio rather than warning his family. His pursuit becomes increasingly reckless, he accepts cosmetic rejuvenation, and he collapses while watching the boy on the beach; news of his death reaches the world that day.

What happens

  1. Shrinking guest numbers, disinfectant smells, and evasive answers lead Aschenbach to investigate disease while secretly following Tadzio through Venice.
  2. Hotel staff and street performers deny danger, but an English travel clerk confirms cholera and advises immediate departure.
  3. Aschenbach considers warning Tadzio’s mother, then chooses silence; a violent dream overwhelms his remaining resistance to desire.
  4. He accepts hair dye and cosmetics, resumes stalking Tadzio, and eats overripe strawberries after losing him in the city.
  5. Feeling unwell, Aschenbach learns that the Polish family leaves after lunch and watches Jaschu nearly choke Tadzio during a fight.
