Daniel Deronda, Chapter 8 summary

Chapter 8 of 71 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 8, Rex becomes ill after his disappointment over Gwendolen, then proposes leaving his studies to farm in the colonies, with Anna eager to accompany him. Mr. Gascoigne rejects their plan, insists that Rex test his judgment, and secures only a reluctant agreement to try the arrangements he makes.

What happens

  1. Rex withdraws into illness, while Anna and his mother nurse him and blame Gwendolen for his suffering.
  2. Once Rex comes downstairs, a passing timber wagon draws his attention, and he tells Anna he wants to settle abroad.
  3. Anna asks to accompany him as his housekeeper, and they bring their proposal to their father.
  4. Mr. Gascoigne argues that heartbreak does not release Rex from his duties or justify abandoning his education.
  5. Rex reluctantly agrees to try his father's arrangements, while Anna privately mourns their lost escape.
