In Chapter 67, Lapidoth settles into his children’s home, creating daily strain and making Deronda and Mirah more guarded with each other. Deronda tells Hans about his Jewish origins and plans, then discovers that his jealous friend believes Mirah loves him, turning romantic uncertainty into hope.

  2. Lapidoth offers to copy manuscripts to gain Deronda’s favor, while Ezra insists that the papers remain under his supervision.
  3. Their father’s restless company burdens Ezra and Mirah, and his presence makes Mirah and Deronda increasingly reserved.
  4. Deronda visits Hans, who admits trying opium and already knows about Deronda’s Jewish origins.
  5. Deronda explains his plans for the East, denies loving Mrs. Grandcourt, and admits his uncertain hopes concerning Mirah.
  6. Hans overcomes his jealousy and tells Deronda that Mirah’s jealousy of the duchess reveals her love for him.
