In Chapter 16, Daniel Deronda grows up believing that Sir Hugo Mallinger is secretly his father, and his unspoken distress strengthens both his reserve and his sympathy for others. 2. Sir Hugo's suggestion of a singing career deepens Daniel's fears, but plans for Eton reassure him about his social position.
  3. Sir Hugo marries, has three daughters, and promises Daniel an income; Daniel keeps his conviction about his birth unspoken.
  4. At Cambridge, Daniel questions examination methods while developing a close, protective friendship with Hans Meyrick.
  5. Daniel helps Hans through serious eye trouble; Hans wins a scholarship, while Daniel fails in his own attempt.
  6. Hans secretly explains Daniel's sacrifice to Sir Hugo, who approves Daniel's departure; Daniel then visits Hans's family in Chelsea.
