Dangerous Liaisons, Letter 51 summary

Letter 51 of 177 · 4 min to read the letter

In Letter 51, the Marquise de MERTEUIL tells the Vicomte de VALMONT how she turns a girl’s religious fears and wish to end her attachment into a meeting with Danceny. She asks Valmont to guide the hesitant young man, while she arranges the mother’s absence and undermines the girl’s trust in her confessor.

What happens

  1. Merteuil scolds Valmont for keeping her waiting when she needs to discuss his approaching meeting with Danceny.
  2. She reports that the girl confesses her attachment and now wants to break with Danceny through fear of damnation.
  3. Merteuil observes that the girl still loves him, while Danceny’s reply offers arguments and sorrow rather than decisive action.
  4. Pretending to support the breakup, Merteuil persuades the girl to explain herself and return his gifts in person.
  5. Merteuil arranges to get the mother out and asks Valmont to encourage a less hesitant approach from Danceny.
  6. She plants doubts about the confessor’s discretion and invokes Mme de Volanges and Gercourt as reasons to persist.
