In Chapter 5, Raskolnikov wanders in distress, dreams of a horse being beaten to death, and rejects his plan to kill the pawnbroker. His relief collapses when he overhears that Lizaveta has an appointment away from home, leaving Alyona Ivanovna alone, and he feels deprived of choice.

What happens

  1. Raskolnikov postpones visiting Razumihin, wanders through the islands, eats and drinks at a tavern, and falls asleep outdoors.
  2. He dreams of himself as a child watching Mikolka and others beat an overloaded mare to death.
  3. The child kisses the dead horse and attacks Mikolka before his father carries him away.
  4. Awake and horrified, Raskolnikov rejects his intended murder and feels peaceful as he crosses the bridge.
  5. In the Hay Market, he overhears Lizaveta accepting an invitation for the next evening at seven.
  6. Knowing Alyona Ivanovna is alone during that appointment, he returns home feeling that his choice has vanished.
