Cleopatra — Chapter 1 : résumé

Chapter 1 sur 34 · Book 1: Harmachis’s Preparation · 9 min pour lire le chapter

In Chapter 1, Harmachis recounts how his dying mother predicts that he can free Egypt and become Pharaoh if he remains pure, prompting Ptolemy to order his death. Atoua substitutes her grandson for him, and the guards kill the innocent child while Harmachis survives under a claim of adoption.

Ce qui se passe

  1. Writing from a prison tower, Harmachis declares his royal descent and confesses betrayal of Egypt and its gods.
  2. His dying mother places a royal serpent on his brow and prophesies either kingship through purity or punishment through failure.
  3. Despite Amenemhat’s demand for secrecy, the prophecy reaches Ptolemy, who sends guards to kill the child.
  4. A stranded boat delays the guards, allowing a relative to warn Atoua and direct her to substitute her grandson.
  5. The guards behead the substitute child and leave Harmachis alive, disguised with mud and playing outside.
  6. Amenemhat makes the dead child’s parents disappear and announces that he adopts Harmachis to replace his murdered son.

Les points à remarquer

Harmachis’s regret connects the childhood rescue with the shame of his prison account. Survival appears as a burden rather than a triumph.
