À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
Readers who enjoy Christmas tales of brothers and sisters and vivid scenes of ancient village life will love this book. It also suits families who read aloud together.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
Four scarlet poppies sway in a Bethlehem garden on a soft summer afternoon. Eight-year-old Naomi has tended them for many days, one for her father, one for her mother, one for her brother Ezra, and the smallest for baby Jonas. Before long she will give every one of them away for the sake of a sickly lamb.
Christmas Light is a short novel for young readers by Ethel Calvert Phillips, who wrote for children in the early twentieth century. It sees the first Christmas from the edges, through ordinary people in Bethlehem when Caesar Augustus orders a census. You get a warm picture of village life, and a family you love before sorrow reaches it.

Naomi's small garden holds her whole world
The story opens on a summer afternoon in Bethlehem, in a garden hardly bigger than a courtyard. Naomi has dark curls and a striped scarlet-and-yellow robe, and she loves this patch of ground as if it were a royal park. An orange tree shades a bench, a thorn hedge keeps the street out, and a grapevine climbs a trellis.
The house is a white box with one door and no windows.
Her father, Samuel, weaves veils for the Temple at Jerusalem. Her mother teaches her songs, prayers and the history of her people. Ezra, eleven, studies the Law and dreams of becoming a Temple shepherd. Baby Jonas crawls after everyone.
One small scene shows her heart. Naomi sits behind the myrtle bush with Jonas and begins to dig a secret well, so that her mother need never walk to the fountain again. A proud father and a patient mother have made her bold and curious in an age that wanted girls quiet.
Before the story tests her, the book shows how much a happy child has to lose.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about La lumière de Noël
What is Christmas Light about?
It tells of Naomi, an eight-year-old girl in Bethlehem, and her brother Ezra during the Roman census. Her family faces a hard season of loss, and the night of the first Christmas draws near the village.
Who are Naomi, Ezra and Eli in Christmas Light?
Naomi is the young heroine, daughter of Samuel the weaver. Ezra is her older brother, who admires the Temple shepherds. Eli is an elderly shepherd who is Ezra's friend and watches for signs that God's promise is near.
Is Christmas Light a true story?
It is a work of fiction. Ethel Calvert Phillips invented the family and their village life, set against the nativity story from the Gospels and the real background of the Roman census and Herod's rule.
Is Christmas Light easy to read?
Yes, in the sense that the chapters are short, the language is plain and the story moves from scene to scene. Children can follow it, and the careful setting also gives adults plenty to enjoy.
What is the main message of Christmas Light?
The book shows faith that waits, love that gives and light that comes into dark places. Its characters hold on to hope through hardship, and the story presents the nativity as the answer to that waiting.
