Candide, Chapter 19 summary

Chapter 19 of 30 · 7 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 19, Candide rejects optimism after hearing an enslaved man describe his mutilation, sends Cacambo to retrieve Cunegonde, and loses his remaining sheep to a dishonest captain. After a magistrate charges him instead of helping, he chooses an unhappy philosopher as his companion for a voyage to Bordeaux.

What happens

  1. After a hundred days of travel, Candide and Cacambo have only two sheep left, though these still carry enormous wealth.
  2. Near Surinam, an enslaved man describes mutilation and exploitation, prompting Candide to reject Pangloss’s optimism.
  3. A Spanish captain refuses passage to Buenos Aires, so Candide sends Cacambo for Cunegonde and plans a reunion in Venice.
  4. Mynheer Vanderdendur takes advance payment, loads the sheep, and sails away without Candide.
  5. The Dutch magistrate fines Candide for his disturbance and charges for hearing his complaint, deepening his anger.
  6. Candide hears many accounts of suffering and selects an impoverished philosopher to accompany him to Bordeaux.

What to notice

Candide defines the optimism he now rejects. The enslaved man’s suffering makes abstract reassurance impossible for him to accept.
