You will love this if you enjoy Victorian family stories about brothers and rivals, ambitious young men, and a love that grows from childhood across many years.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

A small boy of seven clutches his mother's hand in a crowded drawing room, afraid that someone will speak to him and set off his stammer. Then a tiny girl in a rose-colored sash is led in. Asked which of three boys she likes best, she runs past the handsome one and the cheerful one and flings her arms around the stammerer.

Brothers is a Victorian novel by Horace Annesley Vachell. It follows Mark and Archibald Samphire from Harrow to the East End slums and the moors of Sutherland. Mark has the brains and a frail body. Archie has the beauty, the voice and the luck.

Point clé 1 sur 10

A small girl chooses the stammering boy

The book opens on an October afternoon at The Whim, a house the retired Admiral Kirtling built on a windy hill near Westchester. He has taken in his orphaned niece Betty, and the neighbors have come to meet her.

Mark Samphire, seven years old, stands beside his mother, dreading the moment someone speaks to him. His brother Archie, eighteen months older, is pink, golden and at ease in a new sailor suit. Mark's only comfort is his friend Jim Corrance, with whom he seldom stammers.

Betty enters in muslin and coral beads. The Admiral tells her she must pick and choose among his friends. Archie holds out his hands and Jim smiles, but Mark makes no move, because he knows he cannot compete. Betty runs past them both, kisses Mark and is kissed back.

Mark will spend his life trying to deserve that kiss, while Archie and Jim will want her too. A child's first choice is a promise that the grown-up world will test.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Frères

What is Brothers by Horace Annesley Vachell about?

It follows the stammering, gifted Mark Samphire and his handsome, lucky brother Archibald from Harrow to adult life. Both love Betty Kirtling, and the story asks what loyalty, ambition and envy cost two brothers over thirty years.

Who is Betty Kirtling in Brothers?

Betty is the orphaned niece of Admiral Kirtling. She is lively, beautiful and torn between pleasure and goodness. As a child she chooses Mark, and as a woman she must decide between him and his brother.

Why does Mark Samphire stammer and why does it matter?

The stammer keeps Mark from the pulpit he longs for, and it shapes who gets credit for his ideas. It also gives him a way of seeing people clearly, since he must listen and think before he speaks.

What is the main message of Brothers?

Giving freely is a form of strength, yet it needs honesty if love is to survive. The book shows how ambition, envy and admiration shape family bonds and what true work and true love are worth.
