Brothers, Chapter 5 summary
Chapter 5 of 43 · 7 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 5, Archibald Samphire chooses the Church, while Mark loses his chance to play at Lord’s and leaves school without the honors he seeks. Billy warns Mark against overexertion and urges Archie to value his brother’s love, while the farewell supper reveals how deeply the house respects Mark.
What happens
- Archibald chooses the Church rather than the military career his father favors for him.
- Mark faints during a trial match, refuses a place in the eleven, and warmly congratulates Jim Corrance on getting it.
- The brothers and Jim leave Billy’s; preparation for Sandhurst threatens to overburden Mark if he remains at school.
- Billy warns Mark against attempting too much and privately tells Archie how much his brother gives him.
- Archie turns Mark’s criticism of his farewell speech into a comic performance that makes the house laugh.
- The boys cheer Mark, who acknowledges his disappointments, praises Jim’s cricket, and cannot bring himself to say goodbye.
