Brothers, Chapter 20 summary

Chapter 20 of 43 · 11 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 20, Archibald impresses Betty Kirtling with sermon material supplied by Mark Samphire, while his account of Mark leaves her hurt and distant. After questioning Mrs. Corrance about happiness and weighing faith against pleasure, Betty refuses Jim Corrance’s proposal and fears a life without love or children.

What happens

  1. Archibald returns with another manuscript in Mark’s handwriting, after dismissing Jim’s suitability and receiving Mark’s warning against criticizing him to Betty.
  2. Betty hears that Mark sends no message, then finds herself deeply moved by Archibald’s account of his sermon.
  3. Archibald acknowledges Mark’s help but stops short of explaining fully, and Betty promises to hear him at Windsor.
  4. Mrs. Corrance describes an unhappy marriage and explains how Jim gives her life light and meaning.
  5. Betty questions pleasure-seeking and reflects that Mark, and now Archie, awaken her desire to do good.
  6. Betty refuses Jim’s proposal, accepts his continued friendship, and weeps as she imagines a lonely, childless old age.
