A young gray dog wins the Dale

The story opens at Kenmuir, a farm in the shadow of Muir Pike, where old Tammas Thornton and gloomy Sam'l Todd argue over the fame of the Gray Dogs. The newest of the line is Bob, a grave young dog with sad eyes and a white patch on his chest.

Bob has just driven a loose bull back into its stall and sat in the doorway like a sentry. The Master, James Moore, lays a hand on his head and sets him to learn his work. Soon Parson Leggy, the best judge of sheep for miles, sums the young dog up in one word, genius.

The Dalesmen start to call him Owd Bob, and they take his fame as their own. The first idea of the book is simple: some creatures earn trust by quiet skill. That trust becomes the fixed point the rest of the story turns around.
