Part 4 of 49 · 5 min to read the part

In Part 4, a lady stops Jakes from whipping the overloaded narrator and shows that freeing his head helps him pull uphill. Jakes changes his handling on hills, but continued overloading wears the horse down, and poor stable lighting hurts his sight before another sale.

What happens

  1. A corn dealer and baker buys the narrator, but the foreman repeatedly overloads him despite objections from Jakes.
  2. After months of exhausting work, the horse struggles on a steep hill, and Jakes whips him.
  3. A lady persuades Jakes to remove the check-rein, and the horse pulls the load uphill with his head free.
  4. The lady challenges harmful fashion and urges kindness; Jakes agrees to free the horse’s head on hills.
  5. Continued overloading weakens the horse, while his dark stable harms his sight; a large cab owner buys him.
