In XXIV Beowulf Is a Double Conqueror, Beowulf kills the female monster with a giant sword, beheads the dead Grendel, and survives the underwater battle. Although the Danes leave believing him lost, his own warriors welcome him ashore and accompany him to Hrothgar’s hall with the head and sword hilt.
What happens
- Beowulf finds a giant sword and strikes the female monster through the neck, killing her.
- He finds Grendel already dead and cuts off his head to avenge the attacks on the Danes.
- Blood reddens the water, and the Scyldings leave after concluding that Beowulf probably dies below.
- The monster’s hot blood melts the blade, and Beowulf takes only its jeweled hilt and Grendel’s head.
- Beowulf swims ashore, where his waiting warriors rejoice and remove his armor.
- Four men carry the head on a spear, and Beowulf leads his companions into Hrothgar’s hall.
