Ben-Hur, Part 5, Chapter 2 summary

Part 5, Chapter 2 of 88 · Book 1 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 2, Ben-Hur trains Ilderim’s horses successfully, gains control of them until after the games, and asks Malluch to investigate the race arrangements and Messala’s chariot. Meanwhile, Simonides secretly recommends Ben-Hur to Ilderim and warns of threats to his property, prompting the sheik to send orders for intercepting couriers.

What happens

  1. Ben-Hur learns the horses’ names and harnesses the four racers, choosing to ride their father Sirius rather than use a chariot.
  2. His controlled exercises impress Ilderim and the watching camp, while the sight of an Egyptian woman briefly interrupts his speech.
  3. Malluch delivers letters in which Simonides recommends Ben-Hur privately and urges Ilderim to guard against Roman threats.
  4. After two hours of training, Ilderim gives Ben-Hur authority over the horses until after the games.
  5. Ben-Hur asks Malluch to collect his belongings, check race requirements, secure a position beside Messala, and investigate his rival’s chariot.
  6. An Arab messenger carries unwritten orders following Simonides’s advice.
