Chapter 15 of 18 · 15 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 15, Prosper Georges du Roy envies Walter’s fortune, regrets not marrying Suzanne, and secures her promise to consult him secretly about proposals. He accepts Mme. Walter’s money while demanding friendship instead of love, receives an official honor, and resumes visiting the family despite his declared hostility.

What happens

  1. Walter uses his new fortune to buy a mansion and a celebrated painting, then invites visitors to view it.
  2. At the exhibition, Du Roy envies Walter’s luxury and imagines Suzanne as a better marriage choice than Madeleine.
  3. Madeleine’s closeness to Laroche-Mathieu angers Du Roy, while Suzanne’s acquaintance with Marquis de Cazolles makes him jealous.
  4. Du Roy demands a friendship without romance from Mme. Walter, accepts her money, and obtains Suzanne’s secret promise about marriage proposals.
  5. Madeleine presents Du Roy with the Legion of Honor, but the printed form of his name pleases him more.
  6. At a family dinner, Mme. Walter begs for continued visits, and Suzanne identifies Du Roy’s resemblance to the painted Christ.
