De quoi parle ce livre ?

Ayesha, the Return of She is an adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, published in 1905. It is the sequel to She, his tale of a queen who has lived for two thousand years in a lost city in Africa. Haggard wrote it after readers kept asking what became of her and of the men who loved her.

The story is told by Horace Holly, the older, plain-spoken Cambridge scholar. Years after the events of the first book, he and his young friend Leo Vincey set out on a hard search across Central Asia. They follow a promise and a dream that will not let them rest. You get a quest story full of mountains, strange rites and danger, and a tale about love that claims to outlast death. Let us begin with the world these two men are leaving behind.

Point clé 1 sur 4

Two men cannot forget a queen

The novel picks up about twenty years after the end of She. Holly and Leo Vincey have returned to England, but neither man is at peace. What they saw in the hidden land of Kor has marked them both.

Holly is the narrator, and he is a cautious, self-mocking man who prefers books to wonders. Leo is younger and more driven. He believes that the woman they met in Kor, Ayesha, who is called She Who Must Be Obeyed, has not gone from the world for good. She had promised that she would return.

That promise is the engine of the whole book. Haggard sets up a pair of friends who feel pulled by something they cannot argue away. Holly follows Leo more out of loyalty than belief. So the story begins as a matter of faith against doubt, and the two men carry that tension with them as they leave home.

That’s 1 of 4 key points.
