In Chapter 17, Levin rushes into a violent storm to find Kitty and Mitya, and a falling oak makes him fear that they are dead. He finds them unharmed beneath another tree, and his terror gives way to relief, an angry rebuke, and a quiet gesture of apology to his wife.

What happens

  1. The old prince and Sergey Ivanovitch drive away while the others hurry home ahead of the storm.
  2. Levin learns that Kitty and Mitya are not home, takes rugs, and runs toward the copse.
  3. Lightning flashes and an oak falls, making Levin fear for his family and repeat a prayer.
  4. He finds Kitty and the nurse sheltering over Mitya’s perambulator beneath a lime tree.
  5. Levin scolds Kitty, then feels sorry and squeezes her hand as they return with the unharmed baby.
