Part 5, Chapter 12 of 239 · 3 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 12, Anna, Vronsky, and Golenishtchev admire Mihailov’s painting of two boys fishing, and Vronsky decides he must buy it. After their departure, Mihailov sets aside their judgments and returns to his religious painting, where his own sense of artistic possibility guides his work and his happiness.

What happens

  1. Vronsky turns to a small painting of boys fishing, and the visitors praise it enthusiastically.
  2. Their admiration revives Mihailov’s feelings about the picture, but he tries to direct them toward another work.
  3. Vronsky asks whether the fishing picture is for sale, and Mihailov reluctantly confirms that it is.
  4. Alone again, Mihailov dismisses the visitors’ judgments and corrects Christ’s leg in his religious painting.
  5. Too excited to continue, Mihailov gazes happily at John’s figure, covers the painting, and goes home.
  6. The visitors discuss Mihailov’s talent and supposed educational limitations, while Vronsky declares his intention to buy the fishing picture.
