Anna Karenina, Part 3, Chapter 10 summary

Part 3, Chapter 10 of 239 · 6 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 10, Dolly tells Levin that Kitty’s refusal does not prove she cannot love him, but his hurt pride prevents him from accepting this possibility. His brief hope collapses, and a quarrel between Dolly’s children leaves her distressed while he privately judges her parenting.

What happens

  1. Dolly reports that Kitty is well, and Levin reveals that Kitty rejects his proposal.
  2. Dolly explains the limits on a young woman’s choice and argues that Kitty’s uncertainty makes her refusal inconclusive.
  3. Levin briefly feels hope, then rejects any renewed possibility after thinking about Kitty’s choice between him and Vronsky.
  4. Tanya interrupts, and Dolly’s insistence on French makes Levin question the sincerity of her household.
  5. Grisha and Tanya fight over a ball, leaving Dolly deeply upset about their characters and upbringing.
  6. Levin comforts Dolly but privately believes his own children cannot behave that way, then drives away.
