Chapter 35 of 239 · Part 2 · 8 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 35, Kitty learns that her visits cause a quarrel between the Petrovs, accuses herself of false goodness, and lashes out at Varenka before asking forgiveness. Her father’s cheerful presence helps change her view of her charitable life, and she returns to Russia physically recovered and inwardly calmer.

What happens

  3. Kitty condemns her own charitable efforts as dishonest and accuses Varenka of trying to improve her rather than liking her sincerely.
  4. After her mother interrupts them, Kitty regrets her anger, asks forgiveness, and makes peace with Varenka.
  5. Kitty recognizes the difficulty of her chosen ideal and longs to return to Russia without losing her affection for Varenka.
  6. Varenka promises to visit when Kitty marries, and Kitty returns home cured and serene rather than carefree.
