In VI, a dispute over captured sheep brings Cleander into conflict with the Hellenes, and Xenophon urges submission to protect their access to Greek cities. Agasias and the rescued soldier gain release through an appeal, but unfavorable sacrifices prevent Cleander from leading the army, which marches to Chrysopolis and sells its booty.
What happens
- While the Hellenes gather abundant supplies, Cleander arrives with two warships but no transports.
- Dexippus seizes a soldier during a dispute over sheep; Agasias rescues him, and soldiers attack Dexippus with stones.
- Cleander threatens to exclude the army from Hellenic cities, so Xenophon urges the accused men to submit to judgment.
- Agasias accepts responsibility, and the rescued soldier explains that he only upheld the army’s rule about public booty.
- A delegation secures both men’s release, and Cleander agrees to lead the army if the gods permit.
- Unfavorable sacrifices prevent his command; the soldiers march through Bithynian territory, raid for booty, and reach Chrysopolis.
