Anabasis, Book 6, Part III summary

Book 6, Part III of 56 · 6 min to read the part

In III, the Arcadians suffer heavy losses during a raid and become trapped, prompting Xenophon to march toward them rather than face the strengthened enemy alone. His force finds the siege site empty, then rejoins the Arcadians and Achaeans at Calpe Haven, where the survivors explain their confusion about his extinguished watchfires.

What happens

  1. The Arcadians raid villages, but regrouping Thracians destroy Smicres’s company and nearly wipe out Hegesander’s.
  2. The Thracians surround the surviving Hellenes on a knoll, attack from a distance, and cut off their water.
  3. Old men tell Xenophon about the siege, and he urges his soldiers to rescue their comrades for their shared safety.
  4. Xenophon advances with scouts and widespread burning, camps within sight of enemy fires, and extinguishes his own fires after supper.
  5. At dawn, his scouts find the siege site deserted and learn that the Thracians leave after sunset and the Hellenes depart in the morning.
  6. The divisions reunite at Calpe Haven, where the Arcadians explain how the vanished watchfires make them fear abandonment.

What to notice

The appeal links rescue with collective survival. Xenophon treats cooperation as a practical necessity, not merely a duty to comrades.
