Point clé 1 sur 10

Two friends and a girl by the sea

The story opens during the Revolution with two Yale graduates from Connecticut, Edgar and Alonzo. A fall from a horse keeps Edgar from escorting his sister home from New London, so Alonzo goes in his place. That small accident sets everything in motion.

Edgar's sister Melissa is about sixteen, gentle and thoughtful. At a wedding ball she is partnered by Beauman, a fashionable young man who is popular with the ladies. Alonzo is twenty-one, with a romantic temper and a deep love of nature. Without a word said, the two young men are rivals.

One warm June evening Melissa and Alonzo walk to a large rock by the harbor. The moon shines on the water and a whippoorwill sings in the groves. Melissa says that sitting there alone she has felt more pleasure than in the grandest ballroom. Alonzo takes it as a sign that her feelings match his own.

First love here grows quietly out of shared scenery, and doubt grows right beside it.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
