Chapter 4 of 12 · 11 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 4, Alice follows the White Rabbit’s orders after he mistakes her for his housemaid, but a drink makes her too large to leave his house. She escapes by eating a cake that shrinks her, avoids a playful puppy, and finds a caterpillar while seeking a way to regain her proper size.

What happens

  1. The White Rabbit mistakes Alice for Mary Ann and sends her to fetch gloves and a fan from his house.
  2. Alice drinks from a bottle and grows until her body blocks the door, window, and chimney.
  3. She frightens the Rabbit’s helpers and kicks Bill out of the chimney; the Rabbit then proposes burning the house.
  4. Pebbles thrown through the window become cakes, and Alice eats one, shrinks, and escapes into a wood.
  5. Alice distracts a huge puppy with a stick and runs away when it rests.
  6. Seeking something to restore her size, Alice looks over a mushroom and sees a blue caterpillar smoking.
