Résumé de Le mari d’Agatha
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
Readers who love Victorian domestic drama, strong-willed heroines, quiet heroes, family secrets and marriages that grow from duty into deep love. It also suits anyone who enjoys warm country characters and the Dorset coast.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
Agatha's Husband is a novel by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik, the English writer who died in 1887. It follows Agatha Bowen, a nineteen-year-old heiress with a quick tongue and a black kitten, and the quiet man she agrees to marry within weeks of meeting him. The book asks what a marriage needs beyond respect and gratitude, and it answers through two proud people who must learn to read each other.
You move through London drawing rooms, a bear pit in Regent's Park, a hurried wedding and then the windswept Dorset coast, where the Harper family lives in an old house called Kingcombe Holm. Around the couple stand people you will remember: a charming major who cannot say no, a gentle country gentleman who forgets his own dinner, an invalid sister who sees everything, and a calm older woman named Anne Valery. You get humour, family warmth and a mystery that tightens as the husband keeps back something he will not tell his wife.
This summary walks you through the story up to the point where its secrets begin to come apart, then looks at its themes and at the way Craik tells it. The ending is kept for the page that guards it. Let us begin with Agatha herself, rich, free and lonely in a London house, with nothing to do.

A rich orphan with nothing to do
Agatha Bowen is nineteen and lives as a lodger in Doctor Ianson's house in Bedford Square, London. Her father, a rich man from India, has died at sea, and she met only his closed black coffin at Southampton. She has money, rooms of her own, a black kitten called Tittens and no family. Her married friends spend whole afternoons planning her marriage.
Craik draws her with affection. Agatha speaks fast, never says more than she must, and blushes a dark brown instead of a pretty pink. She has a temper, hates needlework and calls young men boys. Her walk is a bold, springing step that seems to belong to open country, and her face is so unlike an English rose that she will soon be teased about it.
Her guardian is Major Frederick Harper, a handsome man of about forty with a Roman profile, black hair and a cross from the Peninsular War. He charms every dinner table and is tender to every woman, a little too aware of his effect. Agatha admires him warmly. He holds her fortune in trust, says he hates business, and she never asks him what he does with it.
One evening the Major brings his younger brother to dinner. Nathanael Locke Harper has just come home from Canada after fifteen years, summoned by the death of a sister. Agatha takes him for a boy until she learns he is twenty-five. He is fair, grave and silent, and he has lived among the Indians. When she says he looks like the Nathanael of Scripture, in whom was no guile, he blushes and says nothing.
The second chapter shows what money cannot buy. Agatha tells her kitten how dull London is, visits her friend Emma Thornycroft and listens for hours to news of teeth and frocks. She knows that nobody at home would miss her if she stayed out all day. That hunger for a duty, a home and one person to love drives the whole book.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
