Aesop's Fables, Part 282 summary
Part 282 of 284 · 1 min to read the part
In The Goatherd and the Wild Goats, a goatherd feeds visiting goats generously while barely feeding his own, hoping the newcomers stay with him. They leave when he takes them back to pasture, explaining that his neglect of his existing flock makes them fear the same treatment if other newcomers arrive.
What happens
- Wild Goats join the Goatherd’s flock in the pasture, and he brings them home with his own goats.
- Bad weather keeps all the goats inside, where he feeds the visitors generously but gives his own barely enough.
- When the weather improves, he returns them to pasture, and the Wild Goats run away near the hills.
- He scolds them for ingratitude, but one explains that his favoritism makes them distrust his care.
