Aesop's Fables, Part 23 summary

Part 23 of 284 · 1 min to read the part

In The Mistress and Her Servants, two servants kill the cock because they believe its crowing makes their mistress wake them too early for work. Without its usual call, the widow wakes them during the night instead, so their attempt to gain sleep brings an even earlier start.

What happens

  1. A hardworking widow makes her two servants begin work when the cock crows.
  2. The servants resent rising so early, especially during winter, and blame the cock for waking their mistress.
  3. They catch the cock and kill it by twisting its neck.
  4. Without the crowing, their mistress wakes them during the night and makes them work even earlier.
