Aesop's Fables, Part 160 summary

Part 160 of 284 · 1 min to read the part

In The Ass, the Cock, and the Lion, a Cock frightens away a hungry Lion, and the Ass mistakes this escape for proof that he can overpower the predator. He pursues the Lion beyond the Cock’s reach, where the Lion turns and eats him, showing the danger of false confidence.

What happens

  1. An Ass and a Cock share a cattle pen when a starving Lion approaches to attack the Ass.
  2. The Cock flaps his wings and crows loudly, frightening the Lion into flight.
  3. The Ass assumes that a Lion afraid of a Cock must fear an Ass even more, so he gives chase.
  4. Beyond sight and sound of the Cock, the Lion turns on the Ass and eats him.
